Shakespeare said it best “A rose by any other name would smell as sweet.” With over 10,000 varieties and many more cultivars the “name” of roses is endless. There are roses named after actors and actress such as the Judy Garland or the Henry Hudson Rose. There are roses named after royalty such as the Queen Elizabeth or the Crown Princess Mary rose (She’s from Denmark). There are roses named after things we love such as the Christian Dior rose or named after things we love: Betty Boop, Cinderella then there are the rose stories centred on love.
There is the story of a girl who picks a rose on Midsummer’s Eve wondering if her love is true she wraps it up and finds it unfaded on Christmas Eve – a sign her lover is true. (Opie and tatem, 189:332). Legend has it Cleopatra used roses to seduce love. For Mark Anthony she had the palace floors carpeted with rose petals, her camber filled two feet deep with red rose petals and the fountains filled with rose water.
Roses have been written about in poetry, spoken about in Chinese proverbs “a thorn defends the roes, harming only those who would steal the blossom.” and referred to in folklore so much so that today certain colours have these meanings behind them:
Red = Love and respect; Deep pink = Gratitude and appreciation; Light Pink = admiration and sympathy; White = reverence and humility; Yellow = joy and gladness; orange enthusiasm and desire; Red and yellow blends = Gaiety and joviality; Pale blended tones = Sociability and friendship.
The origins of roses date back many thousands of years, many believe they were first cultivated in Persia. Sappho a greek poet believed roses sprung from the blood of Adonis. Romans believe Flora the goddess of spring and flowers created the rose changing one of her nymphs into a rose shortly after its death. The thorns on a rose are believed to be that of Cupids arrow. After being stung by a bee it is said Cupid shot an arrow missing the bee and striking a rose bush the result was thorns.
Roses countless varieties, numerous stories and many meaning but one thing is for sure a rose is one of the most romantic gifts at Valentines Day!!
