Amaryllis

Amaryllis is one of the easiest flowering plants to grow indoors.

Amaryllis kits come with the bulb, soil and pot  - everything you need to grow one and ready to bloom. They require direct, natural light, but don't put them directly in front of a window where it will be exposed to drastic temperatures through the winter.

Plant the bulb so the top half of the bulb is above the soil. They will not need a lot of water - follow the directions on the kit. They will bloom in 4-6 weeks of planting, which is fast! For a fun way to teach kids to use math, have them track the growth and measure how fast they grow each week. When they are finished blooming about 8-10 weeks later, they will send up leaves. Once the leaves have turned yellow (usually in the mid to late summer), you can cut them back to just above the bulb and store it in the crisper of your fridge for at least six weeks. Next fall you can replant it, and have it bloom again!
