Outdoor Living

Evolution of Outdoor Living

Back in my day, you were lucky to see a pool in backyard but today the outdoor living game has changed!  With increasing focus on outdoor entertaining, combined with spikes in both costs of residential real estate and the cost to purchase a secondary recreational property, people are investing in their landscapes and the possibilities will blow your mind.

Take a backyard pool for example!  Costs can range from $10,000s to $100,000s dollars.  Add-ons can include digital lighting, swim up bars, built-in hot tubs, or even my absolute favorite - the auto cover.  Think about this as a push-of-a-button cover that slides across your pool, keeping heat locked in and falling debris locked out.  I love these so much that I invested in one. An added benefit for families with young children is that the cover is locked by a key code and is safe to walk on. In the future, it will hopefully lock out a few teenage parties.  For more info:  http://coverstarcanada.com/

Pools are not the only source of outdoor entertainment.  Backyards have evolved to include giant sized chess boards, outdoor theatre screens, personalized putting greens, areas to lounge around a fire and much more.  In fact, a recent backyard bash I attended in Waterdown Ontario included a permanent stage for live bands built into the backyard landscape - talk about rockscaping!!

Food is always a focus and with outdoor living this is no exception.  New outdoor kitchens go far beyond conventional barbecues, showcasing premium quality built-in grills, refrigeration, integrated side burners for a variety of cooking options, and substantial food storage. One of the leaders in this category is definitely DCS by Fisher & Paykel. The DCS brand was the first to pioneer a new category in outdoor cooking — taking conventional barbeques to commercial grade quality and performance. These best in class grills offer features like precise heating zones (for searing, rotisserie and baking), charcoal and wood smoking inserts, intuitive hood and dial lighting, double-sided cast stainless steel grates, and a variety of storage options. DCS offers a full range of outdoor components that will help you build your ultimate outdoor kitchen!

Speaking of baking and ovens, there has been an increase in popularity of installing outdoor wood burning pizza ovens and why not!  When you are entertaining, who doesn’t love pizza?

Gone are the days of strapped-backed outdoor loungers!  Today outdoor furniture is oversized, and feels more indoors than out.  Depending on the size of your outdoor space, some furniture is easily stackable for winter storage, and one of the best evolutions are water and sun resistant pillows, but I still recommend a simple outdoor furniture cover for increasing the longevity of your items.

Outdoor lighting is keeping up too!  Today’s landscape lighting not only helps light pathways and creates a mood, but lighting can be programmed to showcase different lighting colours.  Think about the Toronto Maple Leafs making the Stanley Cup finals with you watching the game sitting in your pool watching on your outdoor television, while your entire landscape is lit in blue celebrating the next win!

We can’t forget about the bar!  An essential item to any party but in outdoor living it can be the heart of an event.  Outdoor bars have changed in appearance and size but have grown in functionality and flair.  It’s not uncommon now to see an outdoor bar with a keg on tap. My recent favourite outdoor bar was a converted shipping crate not only made into a full functional bar but also a space with a lieu (bathroom) and even an extra bedroom to crash in for those friends who consumed too much drink.

I annually host Landscape Ontario’s ‘Awards of Excellence’ and what I have learned about outdoor living is “If you can dream it and your budget can support it, a professional landscaper can build it!!”

Happy Outdoor Entertaining All!!
