Squirrel Appreciation Day!

Eastern Grey Squirrel - Black Variety

You may not be a fan of squirrels, but on January 21st, it is a day to celebrate them because it is Squirrel Appreciation Day!  There are over 280 species of squirrels in the world. In Ontario we have four types of squirrels; Eastern Grey, Red and Northern Flying and Southern Flying. Black squirrels are a colour variety of the Eastern Grey Squirrel and not a separate species.

Landscape Ontario Awards

Landscape Ontario Horticultural Trades Association holds an annual juried competition to recognize excellence among its members, provide marketing opportunities and raise the bar for the industry. Frankie is the host for the event, which he loves to do! Not only does he get to announce the winners and meet the many talented folks behind these great projects, he gets to see all the latest trends in outdoor landscaping.  Below are the special winners of the top awards for 2015 projects.

Growing to Give

Frankie Flower's Mission for 2016  is GROWING TO GIVE!

2016 is a year of opportunity for me to help others. People need to know they matter and today more and more people are suffering from depression and mental illness. This is a reality that shocked my family in 2015. For the first time in our family history one of our family members took his own life, a family member who was a friend, a mentor and a caring, loving guy. In 2016, I would like to honour him and others who have been affected by mental illness and depression.

Frankie's Christmas Wish

Frankie Flower's (aka Frank Ferragine) Christmas Wishes:

I wish for a smile on my children’s faces.

I wish for happiness throughout my home.

I wish for a safe world my children can grow up in.

I wish every friend, foe, child, from any religion or race has a full stomach and a warm place to sleep.

I wish everyone can share a helping hand to others when they can!

I wish every hospital could cure any illness.

I wish I could do more to help you!

I wish everyone a Merry Christmas!

What Happens to Your Plants in a Warm Winter?

We have seen some unseasonably warm weather this winter so far, even with some record breaking temperatures. You may be seeing some growth in your garden as a result, maybe even a few blooms, but there is no need to panic just yet. Typically plants suited to this climate zone can handle a bit of wacky weather. They require a long period of cold, freezing weather before they will start to grow or bloom.
