Urban Test Farm Launched at Yorkdale

This year I had a mission to motivate Canadian’s to grow their own food as a part of that mission I’m pleased to launch  Elevated Eats at Yorkdale Shopping Centre, an urban farm that will serve as an educational resource for area youth. The plots are contained in crates that can eventually be relocated to a larger growing area at Yorkdale after this first growing season. As many of you know farming is close to my heart, this concept of the urban farm will become a community resource for kids who don’t often get to see or nurture their own food.  Elevated Eats will elevate food education in our city!

Why Yorkdale Shopping Centre?

“We’re delighted to be hosting Elevated Eats,” said Claire Santamaria, Yorkdale Shopping Centre’s General Manager. “This is the result of some inspired and innovative thinking. Partnering in a project that offers educational value and will generate local produce is exciting. We’re looking forward to expanding the farm after this first season.”

The Test Farm

Elevated Eats will produce more than  25 varieties of seasonal vegetables and fruits including green beans, swiss chard, cucumbers, eggplant, kale, lettuce, pea shoots, sweet peppers, hot peppers and tomatoes. Herbs such as basil, chives, mint, oregano, parsley, rosemary, and thyme will also be grown. When it reaches its full capacity, the Elevated Eats space will eventually be able to supply Yorkdale restaurants with produce for their menus.  Produce from the first season of Elevated Eats will be donated to local food banks.

The Goal

This first planting and growing season is a test garden designed to gage the productivity of the project before it moves to a large space at Yorkdale in 2017.  My team of volunteers will be tending to the test farm throughout the growing season to ensure the best quality of produce.  This urban farm is a partnership between Frankie Flowers, Yorkdale Shopping Centre along with IFCO, Scotts Miracle Gro Canada, Bonnie Plants Canada and Southwest Greens.
